Cooke, Biana Godin, and their team, explores the use of lipid nanoparticles carrying human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA (hTERT-mRNA LNP) for transfection in human skin cell suspensions (hSCS). The treatment enhances skin regeneration in a partial-thickness wound model, promoting hSCS engraftment and proliferation while reducing cellular senescence and DNA damage—showing promising potential for improving healing in deep skin wounds. 🩹

🫀🫀 I’m excited to share that my illustration was published in the JVS-CIT journal thanks to the request from the researchers at Houston Methodist to visually support their case report on a novel medical procedure. The purpose of the figure was to help researchers and medical professionals better understand the precise placement of devices in the aorta during a thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for an acute type A aortic dissection following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In Figure A, the Medtronic 34mm Evolut PRO+ self-expanding valve is shown with a type A aortic dissection. Figure B highlights the deployment of the GORE cTAG device within the crown of the Medtronic valve, ensuring the coronary ostia remain unobstructed. By visually clarifying the placement and interaction of these devices, the illustration aims to enhance understanding of the anatomy and procedural nuances, ultimately aiding in the education and practice of medical professionals involved in similar interventions.

💠💠 Illustrating a novel magnetothermally-triggered drug release octahedron-shaped carrier that confines nanoparticles within metal-organic frameworks, as an alternating magnetic field generates heat (research by Ge et al.).
Creating this image presented a unique challenge, because the interactions involved—such as the nanoparticles and alternating magnetic field— are not visible to the naked eye. I employed both 3D modeling and hand-drawn techniques to depict the dynamic effects between the carrier and the alternating magnetic field. The elements were off-centered to create a balanced composition for the accommodation of the title, and the blend of warm colors gives a sense of heat emanating from the metal for an eye-catching design.

Bridging the gap between art and law, medical legal exhibits are created by medical illustrators and are often used in courtrooms and settlement negotiations. They help judges, juries, and attorneys understand complex medical concepts or procedures, and can make a real difference in the outcome of a case.

These exhibits can take many forms, including anatomical drawings or 3D animations. They may depict injuries, surgical procedures, or medical conditions, and are often used to support a particular argument or defense.

In medical malpractice cases, medical legal exhibits can be particularly useful. They can help attorneys demonstrate how a medical professional may have failed to meet the standard of care, or how a patient was harmed as a result of medical negligence. They can also help attorneys explain the effects of an injury or medical condition on a person's life and well-being.

Medical legal exhibits are also used in personal injury cases, workers' compensation cases, and product liability cases. They can be used to show the cause and extent of injuries, the medical treatment required, and the long-term effects of an injury or condition. 3D Animation of Cell Division using Nparticles

Surgical Illustration for Laparoscopic Sigmoid Colectomy

I illustrated the steps involved in a Laparoscopic Sigmoid Colectomy, a minimally invasive procedure designed to remove the diseased portion of the colon. In laparoscopic surgery, a surgeon uses a small camera called a laparoscope, inserted through tiny incisions in the abdomen, to access the abdominal cavity. This technique allows the surgeon to visualize the area and perform the procedure with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. The diseased section of the colon is then carefully removed through one of these small incisions. To improve surgical access to the pelvic organs, the patient is positioned in Trendelenburg position, where the body is tilted so that gravity helps shift the intra-abdominal organs away from the pelvis. This positioning enhances visibility and precision during the operation.

Pathogenesis of Peptic Ulcer Disease Science Magazine Mockup

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria adhere to the gastric mucosa and cause inflammation and stomach ulcers. The bacteria uses a urea channel protein to absorb the urea from the surrounding stomach fluid and uses urease to convert urea into ammonia. The ammonia produced is a strong base that neutralizes the acidic gastric environment and protects the bacteria. However, this impairs the epithelial cells of the mucosa, which is a protective lining of the stomach, allowing stomach acid to seep through the lining and leads to the formation of peptic ulcers. Apart from Helicobacter pylori-associated PUD, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the next most common cause of peptic ulcer disease. NSAIDs inhibit the cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzyme, which is responsible for prostaglandin

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria adhere to the gastric mucosa and cause inflammation and stomach ulcers. The bacteria uses a urea channel protein to absorb the urea from the surrounding stomach fluid and uses urease to convert urea into ammonia. The ammonia produced is a strong base that neutralizes the acidic gastric environment and protects the bacteria. However, this impairs the epithelial cells of the mucosa, which is a protective lining of the stomach, allowing stomach acid to seep through the lining and leads to the formation of peptic ulcers. Apart from Helicobacter pylori-associated PUD, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the next most common cause of peptic ulcer disease. Structure of Photoreceptors: Rods & Cones 💡

For this project, I wanted to create an illustration that felt hand drawn entirely on Adobe Illustrator. One challenge was to not make the piece seem flat, so playing with line weight and transparency added dimension and created a sense of flow throughout the piece.

I used a muted pastel color scheme and thought pink for the cones would be a nice subtle reference the photoreceptor responsible for color vision. For the rods, I used a complementary pale green-yellow color. As for the background, I wanted to show where the photoreceptors were situated, relative to the outer limiting membrane, and achieved this by using colors. In addition, negative space along the close up views of the structures were created to help the viewers understand that those were not in relation to the background.

A bit about rods and cones:

Both rod and cone cells have specialized regions called the outer and inner segment which are connected by a cilium. The outer segment is made up of a stack of membranous disks that contain light-absorbing photopigments. In both types of cells, the disks are formed by the infolding of the plasma membrane. In rods, however, the folds pinch off from the membrane so that the disks are free floating within the outer segment. The inner segment holds mitochondria and the machinery for protein synthesis.

Melanocytes are melanin-producing cells located at the stratum basale, or bottom later of the epidermis. SSM is characterized by the lateral spreading of the malignant melanocytes within the epidermis as single cells or as nests. Nests are malignant melanocytes that are huddled together to form loosely rounded structures in the epidermis. The pagetoid, or upward, migration of singular melanocytes through the epidermis is a common characterization in this type of melanoma as well.

This piece really did hit home. I’ve suffered from multiple back surgeries, and being immobile and not being able to do the things I love made me feel inadequate. Thankfully, art was my form of escapism. The scars are a reminder of the times of hardships I’ve endured and where the structure of my character was welded.
